So today... let's head into an old neighborhood… where two postmen work… their job is to find whatever files are requested and deliver them… 😎
The first postman: named HDD (Hard Disk Drive) it's like a tortoise! 🐢
A very hardworking, old fellow… working for years but there's one problem it walks on foot. Inside it there's a spinning disk like an old gramophone which rotates via a motor and searches for data… when this disk spins the computer makes strange whirring, grinding noises! 🤣 The older the disk the longer the wait… and the more waiting there is!
But there's an advantage too it's very cheap… a 1TB HDD costs about as much as a good burger! 🍔 So for handling big files movies, and a junkyard of backups it's a great option…
And the downside is that besides being extremely slow it's noisy gets hot, and there's a risk of losing data during power surges… 🤷
The second postman: called SSD (Solid State Drive) or NVMe! ⚡
This new postman doesn't walk on foot… doesn't even have a motorcycle or car… instead, it runs straight like electricity! There's no spinning part inside it it works on digital micro chips…
The benefits are quite delightful a computer that used to take 3 minutes to turn on… turns on in just 10 seconds with an SSD! The tea that used to get made while Photoshop was loading… now the software shows up in the blink of an eye… the editing or animation project that used to leave you breathless waiting… now runs buttery smooth once placed on it… 😋
But there's a downside too this modern day postman is a bit stubborn and expensive costing roughly 3 to 4 times more than HDD for the same space… 🥸
Right now where HDD can move around 70MB per second… NVMe can play around with 9000MB per second that's how much faster it is… and the higher the speed the higher the price,
but don't accidentally get one with speed below 3000MB because that would be quite outdated check it carefully… 🤷
Now if someone's well off the decision's probably already made… and if the budget is limited… then a smarter decision is to use both…
Install SSD first on which Windows and heavy software (design, editing coding) will be installed so the system runs like a rocket…
And also install a second HDD to store large files (videos, data, backups) that aren't actively worked on, so there's space and money saved too… 🤓
Now remember one solid rule… if a computer these days doesn't have an SSD no matter how heavy the RAM and processor are… the entire system's speed gets wrecked… having at least an SSD for Windows has now become essential!
Oh and listen! SSDs also come in two types… one is SATA, which is a bit older and the modern one running now is NVMe, which is 5 to 6 times faster than the first…
Which storage is best for your work? 🤔
For office work and basic use a 128 GB SSD is enough… get an HDD for the rest of the storage…
For graphic designing, at least a 256 GB SSD should be there… HDD can handle the rest…
And if the work involves video editing and animation at least a 512 GB SSD is essential… along with an HDD for data too…
And if it's heavy 3D rendering it's wise to get as much storage as the budget allows… 😂
