The one called the graphics card, or GPU for short…
Isn't it strange! The CPU i.e. the processor can handle even the toughest task in the world… but it can't display that work on the screen… it always depends on the GPU to bring things forward in the form of colors, images or videos… that's exactly why a small GPU is included inside the CPU itself so that whatever feats the processor is performing internally can be shown on the screen! 😅
Now the problem is that the heavier the feats the processor performs… the more powerful a graphics card is needed to display or save them on screen… 🤦
So if the work is just office tasks basic browsing and Canva designing or CapCut editing… then the integrated graphics card sitting inside the processor is enough… it's basically a free lunch! 🥰
But the moment the work gets heavy meaning Photoshop level design Premiere Pro level editing, 3D animation or heavy gaming etc… the integrated GPU starts choking… and this is where hiring a dedicated graphics card i.e. a separate powerful artist becomes essential… 😎
So now let's talk about the companies that make dedicated graphics cards… there are only two big kings in this world… and they've been outdoing each other for years... 🤷
First is Nvidia the old master who has sat in the world of creative software for so many years that Photoshop Premiere and Blender all fall in line just seeing it… that's exactly why Nvidia is the first choice for creative designers video editors, and 3D artists…
Second is AMD the young one who made a big name in the gaming world… and offers more value on a lower budget… but in creative work Nvidia is still the master… and it's no less in gaming either… so here the focus will stay on Nvidia…
Alright all of Nvidia's graphics cards are divided into two families... and each family runs generation after generation meaning older generations will be cheaper and newer generation graphics cards will be a bit pricier… so the generation has to be chosen according to budget… 🤷
The first family is for the general public… called GeForce! And this family is built for both gaming and creative work… it has 3 well known generations… by the way the numbers that appear after the name are for identifying the graphics card's size 2GB or 4GB or 8GB etc. so don't get confused by those…
The first generation of this family is the GT series… whose graphics cards come with names like GT 730! These can still be bought if the budget is low… and if the budget allows, moving to the next generation is definitely worth it…
The second generation came under the name GTX series… where graphics cards with names like GTX 1050 or GTX 1660 are still floating around in the market… so they're okay for basic gaming and creative work… but for running modern tools a modern graphics card will have to be taken… 🥱
And the third generation is RTX… where first the RTX 30 series came… then the RTX 40 series and now the latest RTX 50 series has arrived… whose price touches the sky and so does the performance…! 😎 Here too the numbers 50, 60, 70, 80, 90 that appear after the series name identify the graphics card's power and size…
Anyway…
The second family is for a special group of people whose old name was Quadro and modern name is RTX Professional… even today it remains the lifeline for most professional designers or editors, 3D artists as well as AI engineers and scientific researchers… and its generations run something like this…
The oldest is the K series… then came the M series… after that the P series arrived… whose cards like P2000, P4000 are still amazing today… then the T series took over which is still quite popular today… and finally the last series RTX Pro which has really pushed the limits, meaning devastating performance man… but the most modern ones are also the most expensive… so if the budget is tight going one generation back is the way! 😅
The graphics card's generation should be chosen according to budget… but let's also understand the size i.e.. how many GB of graphics card to get… 😎
For graphic design and normal video editing 4GB to 8GB is enough...
For heavy video editing and animation 8GB to 12GB gives a nice experience...
For good 3D rendering and high end gaming 16GB or above depending on work and budget…
And if it's about running AI for free… well that's a conspiracy against your wallet anyway... 😭 because no matter how much VRAM you get it never feels like enough...
And yes! Don't just look at GB! When a shopkeeper only mentions GB understand that something's being hidden… ask about the series, ask about the generation ask about the number… these three questions can save thousands of rupees! 😏
